Cricket Club 2006 Annual Report
Wymeswold Cricket Club's 2006 season ended in September with the club making good progress both on and off the field.
In Division F of the South Notts Cricket League the club finished in fifth place having won eight and lost eight of the eighteen games, with two having been lost to the weather. Pete Shaw was the highest run scorer with a total of 407 runs, and his batting average of 33.92 clinched the batting trophy ahead of Richard Bowley who was just behind with an average of 22.27. Bowley was, however, the only centurion of the season with a superb unbeaten 106 at Ellerslie.
On the bowling front, Richard Shelton was the leading wicket taker with 28 victims, but Russ Pitman clinched the bowling award with an average of 11.92.
Phil Parkes was the leading catcher, having clung on to 10 catches over the season.
In the Loughborough Evening League Wymeswold finished as runners-up to Long Whatton in Division Three, and took the opportunity to introduce several youngsters.
The President's Special Award to the player making the most appearances in all games over the summer went to Peter Shaw with 27 appearances, just pipping brothers Andrew and Richard Shelton with 25 each.
The Friday evening junior sessions were an overwhelming success with up to 60 boys and girls aged between 6 and 15 enjoying mixed sessions each week from May until early September. As a result, an under-11 team took part in the Long Whatton Junior Cricket Festival in August and finished a very creditable second, and then beat Long Whatton outright in a match played at Wymeswold in early September.
The club wishes to thank the parents who have stayed and helped on a Friday evening, as well as Mrs Alison Whowell who generously donated a catching net to help hand-eye coordination.
In addition, the Club President Dick Pitman has provided an old-style catching cradle to help with catching practice. Rumours that this was out of frustration at watching so many catches go down over the course of the season may not be too wide of the mark!
The club could not survive without the support we receive through sponsorships and donations each year, and Wymeswold CC wishes to thank the following businesses and individuals who have helped us this season:
- ATB Construction of Burton-on-the-Wolds
- Paul Exton Accountancy Services
- Wymeswold Poultry Farm
- Robert Whowell & Partners
- Collingtons Butchers of Wymeswold
- Mr Ken Barratt
- Mr Graham Black
