WHO Talk – Goodbye Belvoir Angels, Hello Soul Effigies

Tuesday 20 June 2023 7:45pm at Wymeswold Memorial Hall

The next WHO talk will be Tuesday 20th June when Bob Trubshaw will be giving a talk called Goodbye Belvoir Angels, Hello Soul Effigies.

A common motif on Charnwood slate gravestones from the early seventeenth century is now known as a ‘Belvoir angel’. But this name was seemingly invented in the 1970s. And is doubly misleading as the motif is found outside the Vale of Belvoir and, when carved, was not thought to depict an angel. Bob sheds light on what the motif originally meant – and why it might indicate the deceased followed a particular ‘sub-sect’ of Christianity.

As always this will take place in the Jubilee Room of Wymeswold Memorial Hall, Clay Street, Wymeswold, LE12 6TY and start promptly at 7.45 p.m..  Non-members most welcome but will be asked to contribute £3.00. There is a lift to the Jubilee Room if visitors have difficulty with stairs.
