WHO Talk – The History of Pantomime

Tuesday 17 September 2024 7:45pm at Wymeswold Memorial Hall

The next WHO talk is Tuesday 17th September when Dr Anne Featherstone will talk about the History of Pantomime.

A peculiarly British tradition, pantomime burst upon the London stage more than 250 years ago. With a grotesque Dame, girls playing boys and ‘breathtaking’ scenery, the genre is still going strong. Dr Featherstone will talk about interesting moments in its history from the Regency period to the present day.

Dr Featherstone has appeared on The One Show, The World’s Oldest Joke, Who Do You Think You Are, A House Through Time and in documentaries about fairs and circuses on BBC Radio 4.

If you want to get in the mood for this talk then four of the Wymeswold pantomimes from the 1990s can be viewed from links on the WHO web site: www.hoap.co.uk/who/

This talk will take place in the WHO’s usual venue: the Jubilee Room of Wymeswold Memorial Hall, Clay Street, Wymeswold, LE12 6TY and start promptly at 7.45 p.m.. Non-members most welcome but will be asked to contribute £3.00. There is a lift to the Jubilee Room if visitors have difficulty with stairs.
