WHO Talk – Nottinghamshire Castles

Tuesday 21 May 2024 7:45pm at Wymeswold Memorial Hall

The next WHO talk is Tuesday 21st May when James Wright will talk about Nottinghamshire Castles. No, not ‘Nottingham Castle’. But the other nineteen (or is it twenty?) medieval fortifications in the county that are less well-known.

Trained as an archaeologist, James is a buildings archaeologist and historic stone specialist. Between 2004 and 2010 he led the ‘Castles of Nottinghamshire Project’. He provides overviews of various aspects of the ‘how’ and ‘why’ and evolution of these strongholds. At least one was brought back into use by the local ‘Dad’s Army’ during the Second World War.

This talk will take place in the WHO’s usual venue: the Jubilee Room of Wymeswold Memorial Hall, Clay Street, Wymeswold, LE12 6TY and start promptly at 7.45 p.m.. Non-members most welcome but will be asked to contribute £3.00. There is a lift to the Jubilee Room if visitors have difficulty with stairs.

Details of all the WHO talks for 2024 are online at www.hoap.co.uk/who/ along with regular updates about the history of the Wolds villages.
